Post Moves Training with NBA Veteran Rory White

The Fargo Basketball Academy is offering post moves training with former NBA veteran player and coach Rory White. If you have a "high school" player interested in a private lesson(s) with coach White, please call the FBA at 701-356-5666. These special lessons will be offered only a couple days a month at the same cost as all of our private lessons.

Rory White is a former NBA player and a NBA- IBA-CBA-NBDL coaching veteran. Rory had a five-year NBA playing career during which he averaged 7.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 16.7 minutes per game. White’s NBA playing career included the Phoenix Suns, LA Clippers and the Milwaukee Bucks.

After his NBA playing career ended in 1987, White spent the remainder of his playing days in the CBA and overseas.
White’s coaching career began when he arrived as head coach of the IBA’s Fargo Beez from 1995-1998, leading them to two league championships during that stretch. In 1998 he was named assistant coach for the Idaho Stampede (CBA), remaining in that role until he was promoted to head coach of the Stampede during the 2000 campaign. The following season saw White post a league high .708 winning percentage, earning CBA Coach of the Month honors in December and January. White left Idaho in 2001 to serve as head coach for the Fargo-Moorhead Beez, leading them to the National Conference Playoffs and the second best record in the league(25-15). White returned to the helm of the Stampede prior to the start of the 2002 season. In the 2003 season he arrived in Los Angeles as an assistant coach for the LA Clippers. He would coach there until the 2009 season was over. He then was promoted to the head coach position of the Dakota Wizards of the National Basketball Development League. He was head coach there for the next two years. Most recently White spent time in China as an assistant coach for the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association.
A native of Tuskegee, Ala, White played collegiately at the University of South Alabama from 1977-1982. He was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year in 1979 and earned All Conference honors his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. In 1983, White was honored when South Alabama retired his jersey.

White and his wife Julie have two sons, Rory Jr, Josh and his wife Keri, and one daughter, Jenna along with her husband Kyle and reside in Fargo, ND.

Player Development Post Moves and Techniques:
1. Getting open and using good foot work
2. Make contact with the defender
3. Receive the ball
4. Attack in the direction of the pass
5. Read the defense
6. Make a move at the count of three
7. Sell a good fake
8. Shoot with defenders contact
9. Low post, mid post and high post moves
10. Be a good freethrow shooter
The most important thing for a post player is to approach the task with the right mindset. Post play is a physically demanding job that involves aggressiveness, toughness and persistence.
Size is not as crucial and attitude and confidence.

NBA players that Rory has trained include Zach Randolph, Elton Brand, Marcus Camby, Chris Kaman, Hasheen Thabeet and Chris Wilcox.
